Particles in curved spacetime: the Hawking and Unruh effects
Particles cannot be defined uniquely in curved spacetimes due to the generic non-uniqueness of the field vacuum state. I will discuss how to make sense of particles in curved spacetimes with the aid of so-called particle detectors. I will present examples and recent results in 1+1 and 3+1 dimensions in non-stationary situations, with emphasis in the Hawking and Unruh effects. |
