Loop Quantum Gravity and Spin Foam Models
I give an account of loop quantum gravity and spin foam models that is accessible to researchers in field theory and gravity. Starting from the idea that space-time is a Feynman diagram I explain how quantum states of geometry are constructed in spin foam models and how this leads to discrete quanta of area. I discuss the limit of large quantum numbers and the attempt to define a field theory that would have these quanta of geometry as modes. I finally touch on the idea that classical gravity could be the thermodynamics of such a microscopic theory of gravity. |
